AL-specific rules that catch out-of-state contractors
- NASCLA REQUIRED (not just accepted): AL is one of the few states where NASCLA Commercial is the required trade exam path for Major Contractor. Strongest NASCLA-state funnel.
- $50,000 commercial threshold (§ 34-8-2): Below this for non-residential, no Major Contractor license required (but local-permit obligations may still apply). State-funded public works require license REGARDLESS of value.
- Annual renewal cycle (vs biennial in TN/GA/VA): AL Major Contractor + AL Electrical Contractor renew annually. Annual fees + financial-statement updates.
- § 25-11-5 New-Hire Reporting: 7 days from hire (stricter than federal 20-day default + GA's 10-day rule).
- § 8-29-3 Prompt Pay: 7 days from receipt of owner payment (same as VA).
- § 8-1-191 Anti-Indemnity: Contract provisions requiring contractor to indemnify another for that other's OWN sole negligence are void.
