Master path

Exam: PSI — $78
Application fee: $45

TX TML (Master). Must hold a Journeyman license 2+ years and show 12,000 hours under a master electrician's supervision. Apply by mail with the non-refundable $45 application fee; there is no separate license fee. Exam at PSI: two portions, 70% to pass each, $78 for both portions, open book on the 2026 NEC. CE: 4 hr/year (Laws/Rules + Technical Standards + Safety).

TECL (Electrical Contractor) requires designated TX Master. Liability $300K min.

Journeyman path

Exam: PSI — $78
Application fee: $30

Apply by mail (TDLR takes the initial journeyman application by mail) with the non-refundable $30 application fee; there is no separate license fee. After TDLR approves your application you schedule the exam with PSI: two portions (NEC Knowledge and Calculations), 70% to pass each, $78 for both portions, open book on the 2026 NEC (exams reference the 2026 edition from September 1, 2026). You have one year from the date TDLR receives your application to meet every requirement, including passing the exam. You may apply to test early with 7,000 documented hours; 8,000 hours are required for the license.
